Professional Portraits Don't Have to Feel Stiff​

When you think about a professional portrait in The Hague, you might picture a studio, a formal outfit, a very serious expression, and a photographer telling you exactly where to stand.
That is absolutely not how I like to work.

For Dominique’s portrait session, we kept things relaxed. We met near the Binnenhof, grabbed a casual coffee, and spent some time walking and talking around the area while I photographed along the way.

And honestly? I think that is one of the best ways to make professional portraits feel like you.

The Binnenhof Is Basically a Photographer's Playground​

There are so many great spots around the Binnenhof and the surrounding historic center of The Hague.

Beautiful architecture, little streets, interesting textures, windows, doorways, courtyards, and plenty of places where we can stop for a few photographs without making the whole experience feel like a formal photoshoot.

That gives us room to move.

Instead of spending an hour standing in one place trying to manufacture a natural expression, we can walk, talk, explore, and let the photographs happen along the way.

Finding Yourself in the Frame Again

I think women have a funny habit of slowly letting ourselves become a little bit out of focus.

Not literally, of course.

But somewhere along the way, we get busy.

We become mothers, partners, business owners, caregivers, daughters, friends. We spend so much time photographing everyone else, taking care of everyone else, celebrating everyone else—and somewhere in there, we can start to forget what it feels like to really see ourselves.

Sometimes, a photoshoot can help.

Not because you need to look younger.

Not because you need to change yourself.

And definitely not because you need to fit someone else's idea of what beautiful looks like.
Sometimes you just need someone to look at you through a camera and remind you: There you are. You are still here. You are strong. You are beautiful. You are interesting. You are powerful.

Amy's Portrait Photoshoot in Scheveningen

Amy's session was exactly the kind of portrait shoot I've wanted to create for a long time.

This shoot was inspired by the work of Peter Lindbergh, who is probably my favorite portrait photographer.

What I love about Lindbergh's work is the way he photographed women without trying to hide the things that make them them. His portraits could be incredibly simple, but there was always so much strength, personality, and humanity in the frame.

I've wanted to create my own little tribute to that approach for a long time.

And Amy was the perfect match.

Her strength comes through in these photographs in a way that feels completely natural. There's confidence, softness, experience, personality—and absolutely no need to pretend to be anything other than herself.

That's what I want from a portrait.

Not perfection.

"I'm just not photogenic."

I don't believe that.

Most people aren't actually uncomfortable being photographed—they're uncomfortable being watched while they're being photographed.

That's my job to solve.

You don't need to know what to do with your hands. You don't need to know how to pose. You don't need to have spent your life in front of a camera.

We'll try things. We'll move around. We'll talk. We'll find the angles and expressions that feel like you.

There are some people you meet who feel familiar almost immediately. Not because you've known them for years, but because you've lived through some of the same things. You recognize each other in the exhaustion, the excitement, the uncertainty, and the hope.

Emily and her family moved to the Netherlands from the United States on the exact same day my family did. How wild is that?

When you meet someone who has made the same enormous leap across the ocean, for similar reasons and dreaming of similar futures for their kids, there's this immediate, almost unspoken bond. You don't have to explain quite as much. The challenges, the sacrifices, the excitement, and the occasional absolute chaos of starting over somewhere new... you just get it.

And especially early on, when you're in survival mode and barely functioning on a social level, that kind of connection is something special.

​A Walk Through Amsterdam's 9 Streets

Sometimes, connection doesn't need to be complicated. It can be enough to share some space, a little time, a coffee, and a walk through a beautiful city.

That's exactly what we did.

Emily and I wandered through Amsterdam's iconic 9 Streets (De Negen Straatjes), crossing canals, exploring alleyways, and taking in the gorgeous day. We shared life stories, observations, and the little details of this new chapter we're both navigating.

There is something about walking through Amsterdam that makes conversation feel effortless. Maybe it's the canals, the historic architecture, the tiny shops, or the way you can turn down an alley and find something completely unexpected. Or maybe it's simply the luxury of spending time with someone who understands where you're coming from.

Whatever it was, it was a lovely day.

And naturally, we took some photos along the way!

Like me, Emily is building her business here in the Netherlands. Starting a business in a new country comes with its own unique set of challenges, and having professional photos that represent you and your work is an important part of that process.

​A Knitted Duck and a Very Sweet Surprise

Now, I have to talk about the duck.

Emily is a wonderful knitter and teaches knitting, which is already pretty fantastic. But she went above and beyond and actually made and brought me a knitted duck for my daughter, Matilda.

A DUCK. THAT SHE KNIT.

It was so cute and so incredibly appreciated. Truly, one of those thoughtful gestures that sticks with you.

Moving to a new country can be overwhelming. You're building new routines, figuring out logistics, navigating bureaucracy, trying to make friends, and doing your best to keep your family functioning through it all. Small acts of kindness mean a lot during that process.

And a tiny knitted duck for your kid? Absolutely delightful.

There are some photo sessions that feel a little extra special—and this was definitely one of them.

When my family and I moved to Den Haag, one of the very first Dutch friends I had the pleasure of making was Mieke. She is genuinely one of the sweetest, most generous people I've met since moving to the Netherlands, and it was such an incredible honor to photograph her family.

For this familiefoto's in Rijswijk session, we kept things relaxed and personal, starting right at home before heading out to a neighborhood park for some fresh air, playtime, and beautiful family moments.

And I mean it when I say: I LOVE photographing families at home.

There is something so special about documenting your family in the spaces where your everyday life actually happens. The little routines. The favorite chair. The baby toys everywhere. The cuddles on the couch. The way everyone naturally interacts when they're not standing in front of a camera trying to "pose."

That's exactly what I want your family photos to feel like: you.

A Family Session at Home

Mieke's session included Mom, Dad, their sweet baby, and a very special Oma (grandma) who stopped by to join in for some of the photos.

Having multiple generations together makes a family session even more meaningful. We captured the big group moments, but I also made sure to photograph all of those little connections—the baby with Mom, baby with Dad, Oma with her grandbaby, and all the in-between moments that happen naturally when a family is simply spending time together.

Those are often my favorite photographs.

Then, Off to the Park

After spending some time at home, we headed to a neighborhood park for the second half of the session.

One of my favorite things about doing family photos in Rijswijk is that you don't have to travel somewhere elaborate to create beautiful photographs. Your own neighborhood can be the perfect backdrop.

A nearby park, a favorite walking route, a little patch of greenery—these familiar places become part of your family's story.

And honestly, that's what I'm after.

Not just pretty pictures.

Family Photos That Feel Like Your Family

I don't expect everyone to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera for an hour. Babies have opinions. Toddlers have their own agendas. Parents are usually juggling approximately 47 things at once. And sometimes Oma pops by!

There are some places in the Netherlands that I visit and immediately think, I could photograph here all day.

Haarlem is one of those places.

Actually, every time I go to Haarlem, I say some variation of, “I LOVE Haarlem.” It is just so beautiful. The architecture, the cobblestone streets, the canals, the little hidden corners, the gorgeous natural light — there are about a thousand photoshoot ideas bouncing around in my head every time I'm there.

So when this husband and wife reached out for professional headshots in Haarlem, I was very, very happy to make the trip.

Professional Headshots Don't Have to Feel Stiff
When people hear "professional headshots," they sometimes picture the traditional corporate headshot: plain backdrop, awkward smile, hands somewhere they don't know what to do with, and a photo that technically looks professional but doesn't really feel like them.

That's not my style.

I want your headshots to look polished and professional without looking like you were uncomfortable for 45 minutes.

Whether you're updating your LinkedIn profile, building a personal brand, launching a business, updating your company's website, or simply realizing that your current professional photo is approximately eight years old (we've all been there), your headshot should actually represent you.

A Headshot Session for Two
Photographing a husband and wife together gave us the opportunity to get a variety of images rather than just creating two identical headshots.

We captured individual professional portraits for each of them, along with photos that felt a little more relaxed and connected.

That's one of my favorite things about photographing couples who also work together: you can create professional images while still showing some personality.

Depending on what you need the photos for, we can make them:

Why Haarlem Is Such a Great Location for Headshots
One of the best things about taking professional photos outside of a studio is that your surroundings become part of your images.

And Haarlem gives us so much to work with.

We can use historic buildings, beautiful brick facades, canals, bridges, greenery, quiet side streets, storefronts, and all of those little architectural details that make Haarlem feel like Haarlem.

The result is a collection of images that feels much more interesting and distinctive than a generic studio backdrop.

And because we can move around during the session, you get variety without needing multiple outfits or complicated setups.

You Don't Have to Be "Good at Photos"
I hear this all the time:
"I'm terrible in photos."
"I never know how to pose."
"I hate having my picture taken."
"Can you make me look natural?"

Yes. Absolutely.

I've been photographing people for about 20 years and professionally for about 10, and one of the things I've learned is that getting a great portrait isn't really about having a naturally photogenic person standing in front of the camera.

It's about creating an environment where you can relax enough to actually look like yourself.

I'll direct you when you need direction, let you move when movement looks more natural, and keep the session conversational rather than making you hold the same smile for ten minutes.
The goal isn't to make you look like a model.

The goal is to make you look like the best, most confident version of yourself.

When you’re building a personal brand around you, your photos need to feel like you, too.

Not just polished. Not just professional. Not just a bunch of smiling headshots against a white wall.

That was exactly what we were after for Evita’s personal branding fotoshoot in Den Haag.

​Meet Evita

Evita Victoria Isabella is a multidimensional guide, healer, energy activator, healing voice, and self-described dragon queen. Her work centers around inner exploration, transformation, energy, healing, and helping people reconnect with their most authentic selves. She offers Inner Journey Guidance, Healing Voice work, Dragon-related experiences, and more, as well as sharing her perspective through her podcast and blog.

In other words: a generic corporate headshot was absolutely not going to cut it.

Evita wanted to update the personal branding photography on her website and social media so that her visual presence felt more aligned with who she is and what she does.

And that's one of my favorite kinds of photography to create.

Personal branding photography isn't just about getting a few nice pictures of someone's face. It's about figuring out what your brand feels like and then finding ways to photograph that feeling.

Finding the right location

When we started talking about where to do the shoot, Evita mentioned the location where she normally does her work. The space itself was functional, but there was one problem: the wall color wasn't particularly complimentary to her skin tone.

She also showed me some of the clothing she was considering wearing and talked through what she wanted the photos to communicate.

And immediately, I thought: The Bookstor Café.

The Bookstor Café is honestly one of my favorite places I've been since arriving in The Hague, so I was already itching for an excuse to go back.

But more importantly, it was a perfect fit for Evita.

The books. The cozy atmosphere. The color. The textures. The little corners and details. Her outfits. Her personality.

Everything started clicking into place.

Sometimes the best location isn't necessarily the most obvious "branding photography" location. It's the place that already feels like the person you're photographing.

And The Bookstor Café gave us so many different visual possibilities without making the photos feel overly staged.

Personal branding photos that actually feel personal

One of the things I loved about this session was that we weren't trying to force Evita into some predetermined version of what a "professional" photo is supposed to look like.

We could play. We could move around. We could use the bookshelves, tables, chairs, windows, colors, and little details throughout the café. We could create portraits that feel polished enough for a website while still feeling like Evita. And that's really the goal.

Your website might be someone's first introduction to you. Your Instagram might be where they get a sense of your personality. Your LinkedIn profile might be where someone decides whether to reach out.

Your photos should make all of those places feel connected. For a personal brand, consistency doesn't mean every image has to look identical. It means the images should all feel like they belong to the same person.

​And yes, I let the shoot be a shoot

I don't believe in rushing a branding session just because we've technically gotten "enough" photos.

If there's another outfit we want to try? Let's do it.
If we find a corner that works beautifully? Let's use it.
If something spontaneous happens that makes a great photograph? We're taking it.

There are no artificial time limits, no arbitrary number of photos, and no limits on how much I edit your gallery.

We're there until we've gotten what we need.

And in Evita's case, we ended up with more than 200 finished photographs.

From Tuesday's shoot to Thursday's gallery

Here's another thing I think is worth talking about: You shouldn't have to wait forever for your branding photos.

We photographed Evita on a Tuesday.

I photographed, edited, curated, and delivered her gallery on Thursday.

That's 200+ edited images delivered in less than a week.

Because when you're running a business, your photos aren't just pretty pictures sitting in a folder.

One of my favorite things about moving to the Netherlands has been discovering just how different—and wonderful—everyday life can be.

Case in point: this photoshoot.

When I told friends and family back in the United States that I was meeting a man I'd never met before... in a graffiti tunnel... to take photos... by myself...

...they imagined the beginning of a true crime documentary.

Instead?

It turned into another highlight session since moving to Den Haag.

The "graffiti tunnel" was full of life. There was a near constant stream of cyclists passing through—grandparents, families with little kids, business professionals commuting to work, and people out enjoying their day. It was colorful, vibrant, diverse, safe, welcoming, and about as far from the graffiti tunnels I knew in the States as you could imagine.

Walter was a true delight.

And together we created a gallery that perfectly captured the energy of his business.

Walter is a Zumba instructor who needed fresh images to promote his classes and personal brand.

Waar kan ik professionele portretfoto's laten maken in Den Haag?
Haagse Bos is one of my favorite locations for natural, professional portraits, but I also photograph clients throughout Den Haag at offices, parks, urban locations, and other places that fit your personal brand.

How long does a headshot session take?
Most professional headshot sessions take between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on how many looks or locations you'd like.

Can you help if I'm awkward in front of the camera?
Absolutely. Most of my clients tell me they're not comfortable having their photo taken. My sessions are relaxed, conversational, and guided so you never have to wonder what to do.

​I'm excited to share with you my first photoshoot in The Netherlands! This family session took place at one of the locations I was most excited to shoot at: Westduinpark. The sand dunes and beach are such a great location for photos and for kids to play. Plus, with the beach clubs, a drink and a bite are never far away. 

One of the challenges of starting over in a new city (one of many) is figuring out locations, and how to get to them. Like most things so far, I had to learn the hard way, and definitely took a bit of the long route getting there. It was quite a trek through sandy hiking paths, but eventually we found where we were trying to go and the view was breathtaking. I can't wait to go back and explore more...and look for those elusive Highland Cows I hear wander around there. 

​This family session was special for many reasons, not only was it my first shoot here, but this was a fellow queer family who immigrated this year. We discovered we had quite a bit in common and our kids played well together, which is always a win!

​What I love about family sessions is finding that balance between posed shots where everyone is looking their best, and candid shots where all the personalities and relationships come out. This session was full of both. And the ocean waves, sand, and sea shells provided plenty to capture the kids attention and pull them and the adults into the moment, to forget I was even there.

After years of photographing, illustrating, designing, and managing creative projects throughout Missouri, it's time for my biggest adventure yet.

Designing Indie is moving from Springfield, Missouri to The Hague, Netherlands!

In July 2026, my wife, Xena, our daughter, Matilda, our dog Roxie, and I will begin an exciting new chapter as we relocate to the Netherlands under the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) Visa.

While my address is changing, the heart of my business isn't.

I'll continue serving clients around the world while expanding my creative work throughout Europe.

And honestly...

I couldn't be more excited.

Continuing to Work with Art Museums

Some of my favorite professional experiences have come from partnering with museums and cultural organizations. From photographing exhibitions and community events to designing exhibit banners, newsletters, promotional materials, and marketing graphics, I love helping museums tell their stories visually. I'm excited to build relationships with museums, galleries, theaters, and arts organizations throughout the Netherlands while continuing to support clients remotely whenever possible.

Medical & Commercial Illustration

Long before I became a full-time illustrator, I spent nearly a decade writing for medical websites and researching complex healthcare topics. That background continues to influence my illustration work today. I love translating complicated ideas into visuals that are clear, engaging, and scientifically grounded.

Whether illustrating molecules, medical devices, patient education materials, journal covers, or webinar graphics, I approach every project with curiosity, research, and close collaboration. I'll also continue creating commercial illustrations for products, brands, editorial publications, and licensed artwork.

Project Management for SEO Marketing Agencies

One part of Designing Indie that many people don't immediately associate with creativity is project management. But to me, it's one of the most creative jobs there is. Over the past five years, I've managed more than 50 long-term SEO campaigns for businesses across a wide variety of industries.

From coordinating strategists, writers, designers, and developers to keeping projects on schedule and aligned with client goals, I love bringing order to complex marketing campaigns. As I relocate to the Netherlands, I'll continue working remotely with SEO agencies and in-house marketing teams around the world.

Distance has never been a barrier to good communication.
